LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's golf team posted its best finish of the season on Sunday, shooting a final-round 291 to finish in second place at the Las Vegas Collegiate on Sunday.
The Rebels (288-284-291--863) were one of just two teams to break par for the tournament. For the second straight year, Georgia Tech (287-276-281--844) claimed the team title, shooting an impressive 20-under par.
The Yellow Jackets' Troy Matteson also looked impressive, making a final-round surge to win the individual crown. Matteson (70-69-69--208) fired 69 for the second straight day to climb into a tie with Florida's Camilo Villegas (68-69-71--208), who led following both of the first two rounds.
Two Rebels finished among the top five in the event. Brett Foulds (73-69-73--215) and Ryan Moore (74-68-73--215) both tied for fifth at one-under for the tourney.
Senior Clark Corbett (68-76-73--217) just missed a top-10 finish, carding a 73 on Sunday to finish one-over par and tied for 12th.
At four-over, Brandon Askew (73-75-72--220) turned in the team's best score in the final round and capped the team scoring for the day. He tied for 29th overall.
J.C. Deacon (79-72-73--224) produced the fourth round of 73 for the Rebels on Sunday to finish tied for 43rd at eight-over par.
Juniors Brien Davis (68-74-76) and Calvin Kupeyan (75-74-76--225) also played, competing as individuals in the 16-team, 84-player field. Davis, who challenged for the lead throughout the tourney, finished in 18th place, while Kupeyan tied for 46th.
The Rebels continue spring play next week when they travel to Austin, Texas, to compete in the Morris Williams Intercollegiate on March 25-26.
