STORYLINE: A new addition to the Rebels' 2001-02 schedule was the Kepler Intercollegiate, hosted by Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. The Kepler gives UNLV the opportunity to play the schools' Scarlet Course (Par 71--7,231 Yards) just seven weeks before this year's NCAA Championship is contested on the same course, an advantage the Rebels would love should they advance to the national finals. Presented by Cleveland Golf, the Kepler is a 54-hole event, with 18 to be played each day between Friday, April 12 and Sunday, April 14. This tournament ends the regular season for UNLV, who will participate in the Mountain West Conference Championship on April 29-May 1 at Sunriver, Ore.
ABOUT UNLV: The Rebels' spring has been as up and down as the weather. On the heels of back-to-back top-5 team finishes, UNLV placed 13th of 15 at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in poor weather in Austin, Texas, and eighth of 10 at the U.S. Collegiate Championship in Tucson, Ariz. Senior Clark Corbett and freshman Ryan Moore have led the team's finish in six straight tournaments. Despite up-and-down finishes, the Rebels are still 12-4-1 head-to-head against Mountain West Conference competition this year.
THE FIELD: The Kepler Intercollegiate features a feared field of 17, primarily composed of Midwest teams. Nine Big-Ten schools and four Mid-American Conference squads make up all but four of the event's field. Ohio State hosts: Auburn, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kent State, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Purdue, Texas A&M, Toledo, UNLV and Wisconsin.
THE LINEUP: UNLV's lineup for the Kepler Intercollegiate will be: senior Clark Corbett, junior Brien Davis, sophomore Brandon Askew and freshmen J.C. Deacon, and Ryan Moore.
HEAD COACH DWAINE KNIGHT: UNLV men's golf head coach Dwaine Knight is in his 15th season as the Rebels' skipper. During his tenure, UNLV has been a perennial power with five league championships, 12 NCAA Championship appearances, and the 1998 national title. The only coach in the country to twice claim GCAA National Coach of the Year honors in the 1990s (1991 and 1998), Knight has produced 15 All-Americans and sent four players to the PGA Tour (Jeremy Anderson, Chad Campbell, Ed Fryatt, Chris Riley).
