TUCSON, Ariz. - The UNLV men's golf team is in ninth-place at the U.S. Collegiate Championships after shooting an eight-over-par 296 in the first round at Tucson National Golf Club on Friday.
The big news of the day was the 10-under 62 turned in by Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan, who is enjoying a three-stroke edge over Arizona's Chris Nallen in the individual race. The Rebels trail Texas for the team lead by 18 strokes.
Brien Davis is UNLV's surprise first-round leader, shooting 71 to tie for 15th. A 73 from Ryan Moore and a 74 from Clark Corbett placed them both in the top 30.
Brandon Askew's 78 pushed the Rebels' total to 296. J.C. Deacon's 83 was discarded.
Second-round play at the U.S. Collegiate Championships will begin at 7:00 a.m. MDT on Saturday.
