Rebels Close the Door on Yavapai College

Aug. 19, 2002

LAS VEGAS - Junior midfielder Alex Hernandez (Indio, Calif.) led the UNLV men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout of Yavapai College in exhibition play Monday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

Hernandez, the Rebels' second leading scorer last season with 16 points, wasted no time in scoring the first unofficial goal of the 2002 season off a direct free kick from 22-yards out, bending the ball past the near post in the second minute.

Yavapai College, one of the top junior college soccer programs in the nation with three NJCAA national championships, could not find the back of the net, even after testing the UNLV goalkeepers with six shots on goal.

In the 89th minute, freshman forward Salvatore Wise (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) scored the final goal of the night off a leftside cross pass from senior Tuomas Talvio (Helsinki, Finland).

Senior goalkeeper Justin Dennis (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had five saves, before being relieved by rookies Brian Galvin (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Ben Stollerman (Park City, Utah) in the second half.

The Rebels will next take on Tyneside (a local club team) on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
