STORYLINE: The UNLV men's golf team kicks off the 2002-03 season this week at the 48th annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M. A yearly favorite for the Rebels, the 54-hole tourney begins on Friday, Sept. 13, with a 7:30 a.m. MDT shotgun start at the University of New Mexico Championship Course. Following 36 holes on Friday, the 18 teams will play their final round on Saturday, Sept. 14.
ABOUT UNLV: The Rebels return four starters and seven letterwinners from last season's MWC Championship team, led by sophomore All-American Ryan Moore. Moore was one of the top amateurs in the country last summer, winning the U.S. Public Amateur Links and qualifying for both the U.S. Open and the Masters. Moore begins the year ranked sixth nationally by Golf World.
THE TUCKER: The Rebels make their 16th appearance at the Tucker and open their fall season there for the 13th time. Hosted on the same course that UNLV won its 1998 national championship, the Tucker marks an annual return to the alma mater of head coach Dwaine Knight. Last season, the Rebels opened on a roll and fired even par in the final round to tie for fourth place.
THE FIELD: The University of New Mexico plays host to 17 teams: Air Force, Arizona, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, New Mexico JV, New Mexico State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, San Diego State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UNLV, Utah, Wyoming and Texas-El Paso.
THE LINEUP: The Rebels' lineup for the Tucker is senior Brien Davis, sophomore Ryan Moore and Travis Whisman, and freshmen Ryan Posey and Mitch Carlson. Davis, Moore and Whisman combine for 18 rounds of experience on the Championship Course.
HEAD COACH DWAINE KNIGHT: UNLV men's golf head coach Dwaine Knight begins his 16th year at the helm of the Rebel program. During his tenure, UNLV has been a perennial power with five league championships, 13 NCAA finals appearances and the 1998 national title. Last year's MWC Coach of the Year was the only mentor to twice claim GCAA National Coach of the Year honors in the 1990s (1991 and 1998). He has produced an amazing 30 All-Americans and guided five different players to the PGA Tour.
