ROCKY FACE, Ga. - Overcoming a four-hour rain delay and tough course conditions, three players on the UNLV men's golf team shot under par, and the Rebels sit in third place after the first round of play at the Carpet Capital Collegiate on Friday.
Sophomore Ryan Moore led the way for UNLV, finishing two strokes under par on the par-72, 6,906-yard Farm Golf Course. He sits four strokes off the pace set by Wake Forest's Bill Haas and tied for seventh place individually.
Supporting Moore's efforts were Travis Whisman and Mitch Carlson, tying for 13th place after first-round 71s. Whisman is playing just his second tournament since returning from back surgery a year ago, and Carlson is playing in just his second tournament as a collegian.
Senior Brien Davis wrapped up the Rebels' three-under 285 with a 73. Tied for 34th on the leaderboard, he is just one shot ahead of teammate J.C. Deacon.
The team round of 285 has the Rebels just seven strokes behind Florida' the early leader. East Tennessee State clings to a one-shot edge over UNLV.
