ROCKY FACE, Ga. - For the third time in three days, a young Rebel stepped up at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, and the UNLV men's golf team held on to finish third at the prestigious tournament on Sunday.
Mitch Carlson (71-74-68--213), a local freshman from Durango High School, carded the best score of his young career with a four-under 68 at The Farm Golf Club (par 72, 6,906 yards). That set the table for the squad to record a four-under 284, its best round of the tournament.
The round moved the Rebels (285-287-284--856) to eight-under and kept them one shot ahead of Florida (278-284-295--857), who collapsed after leading for the first two rounds. Top-ranked Clemson (287-282-281--850) took advantage, but had to hold off Augusta State (294-281-277), who came up two strokes short despite shooting the day's best round.
Individually, Carlson tied for 10th to lead the Rebel lineup. At three-under, he finished eight strokes behind co-medalists Bill Haas of Wake Forest and Troy Matteson of Georgia Tech.
UNLV sophomore J.C. Deacon (74-67-73--214), whose second-round 67 had him in the top 10, needed 73 strokes to complete Sunday's round. He tied for 16th at two-under.
Ryan Moore (70-74-71--215), who began the day at even par, birdied four holes on the back nine to finish one-under and save a top-20 finish.
Travis Whisman (71-78-72--221) rebounded from his worst outing of the year on Saturday with an even 72 in the final round. He tied for 46th, followed by Brien Davis (73-72-77--222) in 48th place in the 90-man field.
As a team, the Rebels have shot par or better in all but one round this year, and now have second-place and third-place team finishes to their credit.
They will try to get their first victory of the year at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which will be played at the Old Overton Club (par 71, 6.936 yards) in Birmingham, Ala., on Oct. 13-15.
