LAS VEGAS - All three UNLV players won their first round matches before falling out of the winners' bracket in the 2003 Women's Collegiate Tennis Kickoff Classic, which began Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
No. 85-ranked Paulina Janus breezed by Joanna Kao of top-ranked Stanford 6-1, 6-1 to start the day while junior Agnieszka Abram got by Katie Cunha of 22nd-ranked Notre Dame 6-4, 6-4 and Tracie Chong swept Alexandra Smith of No. 3 Georgia 6-2, 6-0.
The Lady Rebels were not so fortunate in the second round as Janus fell to the nation's fourth-ranked player, Vilmarie Castellvi of Tennessee, 6-0, 6-1. Abram lost to No. 13 Alice Barnes of Stanford 6-0, 6-4 and Chong was swept by No. 30 Erin Burdette, also of Stanford, 6-3, 6-4. College tennis' top-ranked player, Georgia's Agata Cioroch, earned a bye in the first round and then dispatched Boglarka Berecz of Florida 6-3, 6-4. In fact, all eight seeded players advanced to make up the quarterfinals draw.
In doubles play, UNLV's lone entry of Janus and Abram was bested by Tennessee's Castellvi and Melissa Schaub, 9-7, in a pro-style set.
The tournament, which is free and open to the public, will hold its singles quarterfinals and semifinals Saturday with singles play beginning at 9:30 a.m. and doubles set for 3 p.m. A consolation bracket also will be played. The finals are set for Sunday at 10 a.m.
