LAS VEGAS - The 17th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team lost only one set en route to a 7-0 season-opening victory over former Big West Conference-rival and No. 72 New Mexico State at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.
The Lady Rebels opened the day by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point. Paulina Janus and Agnieszka Abram won at the top spot 8-4, Tracie Chong and Cindy Treber combined for an 8-1 win at No. 2 and Gyorgyi Zsiros and Amy Hadziosmanovic teamed up for an 8-2 victory on Court Three.
In singles play, 85th-ranked Janus won 6-2, 6-4 over Stella Veerman at the top position. No. 120 Gyorgyi Zsiros improved her career dual-match record to 22-1 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Lejla Porobic at the second spot. Also winning for UNLV were Chong, who was pushed to a third-set super tiebreaker in her victory, Abram, Hadziosmanovic and Treber, who was making her collegiate debut.
"With this being our first match, I'm proud of the effort," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "There is no doubt that we were a little rusty but to beat a solid New Mexico State team 7-0 is a great way to start the year."
The Lady Rebels continue their homestand vs. Weber State Saturday at 10 a.m.
