Box Score
LAS VEGAS - UNLV broke a four-game scoreless streak by scoring the first goal of the night against 19th-ranked Utah, but two goals in a 2:22 span sparked the Utes to a 5-1 victory in Mountain West Conference women's soccer action on Thursday night from Peter Johann Field. With the win, Utah moved to 12-2 overall, 3-0 in the conference, while UNLV fell to 6-7-2 in the MWC.
The Rebels became the first Mountain West team to score against Utah this season when Erin Egertson tallied her third goal of the season at the 13:37 mark. After a free kick by Rachel Buscovich reached into the box and Utah goalie Ashley Mason deflected the shot, Nickie Olson collected the ball and fed Egertson, who chipped the ball over Mason into the top of the net for the score and the 1-0 lead.
Utah struck back at the 36:48 mark, when Amber Bower took a cross in the box from the left side on a pass from Esther Imotan, and sent a shot to the right post to tie the score at 1-1. Just 2:22 later, Amanda Feight's shot was stopped by UNLV's Desiree Kelly, but Missy Dennis tapped in the ball from three yards out for the 2-1 Utah advantage at 39:20.
The Utes opened the second half with a goal to seal the game, when Tracy Stratton headed in Dennis' corner kick for a 3-1 lead at 48:17. Utah added two late goals, as Julie Herdic fed Feight on a breakaway, who sneaked in a shot to the left post for a 4-1 lead at 83:16. Imotan ended the scoring with a blast from 20 yards out at 85:10 to account for the final score of 5-1.
Kelly finished with nine saves for the game for UNLV. Mason posted four saves in 45 minutes for the Utes, and Kaycie Zimmerman played the last 45 minutes, saving all three shots she saw.
The Rebels will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, as they host Mountain West rival BYU at 7:30 p.m. at Peter Johann Field.
