LAS VEGAS - UNLV football set a school record Monday by picking up its seventh and eighth Mountain West Conference player of the week nods in 2003.
After upsetting New Mexico 37-35 Saturday, the 5-4 Rebels got both the defensive and special teams player of the week for the fourth time this fall. The previous record for players of the week was set in 1994 when the Rebels earned seven Big West Conference honors.
Sophomore free safety Joe Miklos was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week for the first time after turning in a career-best performance. The converted linebacker from Concord, Calif., totaled seven tackles (including six solo), forced a fumble that led to a field goal, intercepted a pass to thwart a Lobo scoring drive and returned a fumble 61 yards for his first career score.
Miklos shared this week's honor with Utah defensive back Dave Revill (15 total tackles in triple-overtime win at Air Force).
Also, UNLV senior place-kicker Dillon Pieffer was named MWC Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time in his career after scoring 13 points in the victory. The native of Colorado Springs was perfect in four extra-point attempts to give him a school-record 106 in his career. He also was true on all three of his field goal attempts, including a career-long 50-yarder that was the ninth-longest in UNLV history and best effort since 1994. Pieffer, who is ranked 11th in the nation with 1.67 field goals per game, also won an MWC award earlier this year on Sept. 22 and on Dec. 2, 2002.
Wyoming quarterback Casey Bramlet (337 yards passing, two TD passes and one rushing in win over Colorado State) was named offensive player of the week.
