Collins Era Ends

Dec. 2, 2003

LAS VEGAS - Deitre Collins has resigned her position as the head coach of the volleyball program at UNLV, athletics director Mike Hamrick announced Tuesday.

"I want to thank Deitre for all of her hard work," Hamrick said. "She is a quality individual and we are now going to look forward to the process of hiring a new coach."

Collins' contract will be honored through the end of the term, which runs until June 30, 2004. Collins will be reassigned within the athletics department until her contract expires.

"I have enjoyed my time here at UNLV immensely," Collins said. "However, I feel that the time has come for a change and I am looking forward to moving in another direction."

Collins took over a program that was non-existent for 11 years in 1996 and spent eight seasons as its head coach.

The 1998 Western Athletic Conference Mountain Division Co-Coach of the Year led her second team to its best winning percentage in program history with a 23-8 record (.742) and a WAC Tournament semifinal appearance.

The fourth coach in Rebel volleyball history, Collins has served as the head coach of the U.S. Junior National Team during three summers and has been an assistant for the U.S. National Team.

Collins leaves UNLV with a career record of 89-136 (.396). Her 2003 squad went 13-17 overall and 4-10 in conference play.
