LAS VEGAS - Playing through damp and cool conditions, the 17th-ranked Lady Rebels opened play at the Second Annual UNLV Women's Tennis Spring Invitational with a 4-0 win over Montana State at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.

Because of early rainstorms, the morning round of matches was combined with the afternoon set. All four matches, which were halted when a team reached four points, were played at once on three courts apiece.

The Lady Rebels improved to 5-1 this season after taking both completed doubles matches for one point and then sweeping the three completed singles contests. Winning in singles for UNLV -all in straight sets - were Paulina Janus at No. 1, Gyorgyi Zsiros at No. 2 and Tracie Chong at No. 3. In doubles, Janus teamed with Agnieszka Abram to win at the top spot while Chong and Cindy Treber were victorious at No. 2.

The Lady Rebels advanced to Saturday's semifinals where they will meet No. 75 Cal State Northridge. The Matadors downed Southwest Missouri State 4-3. The other semifinal match will see No. 44 Oklahoma, which defeated Northern Arizona 4-0, take on 57th-ranked New Mexico, which was a 4-1 winner over Loyola Marymount.

Semifinals are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m PST, weather permitting.
