LAS VEGAS - UNLV lost the battle at the top but won the war as the 17th-ranked Lady Rebels downed No. 75 Cal State Northridge 5-2 to advance at the Second Annual UNLV Women's Tennis Spring Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Saturday.
Playing in cold weather that included a 15-minute rain delay, UNLV improved to 6-1 on the year by winning two of three doubles matches for one team point and then taking four of six singles matches.
Winning in singles for UNLV were Gyorgyi Zsiros at No. 2, Tracie Chong at No. 3, Agnieszka Abram at No. 4 and Amy Hadziosmanovic at No. 6. Down 5-0, the Matadors won a super-tiebreaker at the fifth spot and then saw Tereza Simonyan rally to get by Paulina Janus on Court One 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The Lady Rebels advanced to Sunday's championship for the second consecutive year and will face No. 44 Oklahoma. The Sooners eased by No. 57 New Mexico 6-1 in the other semifinal.
The remaining two matches, between Northern Arizona and Loyola Marymount and Southwest Missouri State and Montana State, did not get through doubles play before another rainstorm forced postponement.
Those four teams will complete play by resuming their second-round matches on Sunday at 9 a.m. The championship and third-place matches are scheduled for noon, weather permitting.
