LAS VEGAS - UNLV won the doubles point before splitting singles, which proved just enough to give the No. 18 Lady Rebel tennis team a nail-biting 4-3 victory over No. 32 Texas A&M among perfect weather conditions at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Tuesday.
UNLV won its sixth straight, including the last three over ranked opponents, to improve to 8-1 overall while the Aggies fell to 8-5.
The Lady Rebels began by taking two of three doubles matches for one team point. Winning 8-5 at the third spot were Gyorgyi Zsiros and Amy Hadziosmanovic while the clincher came at the top where Paulina Janus and Agnieszka Abram won 8-6. The visitors took the second match 9-8.
In singles play, after Texas A&M tied things with a win on Court Four, UNLV got victories from Hadziosmanovic at No. 6, 7-5, 6-3, and Zsiros at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2, to build a 3-1 lead. The Aggies rallied, however, picking up a win at No. 3 while heading toward an eventual straight-set victory at No. 5.
The team match came down to the only three-setter of the day, at the No. 1 spot, where Paulina Janus overcame Jessica Roland 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Janus improved to 14-8 on the year as the senior picked up her 50th career victory at the school.
"This was a great win over an outstanding Texas A&M squad," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "The match showed some of our team's grit in pulling out a close one."
UNLV will face an even stiffer test on Wednesday when it hosts No. 6 Duke beginning at 2 p.m.
