UNLV More Than OK Against Oklahoma

March 2, 2003

LAS VEGAS - After losing a close doubles battle, host UNLV rallied to defeat Oklahoma 4-2 in the championship match of the Second Annual UNLV Women's Tennis Spring Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Sunday.

The 17th-ranked Lady Rebels improved to 7-1 while the 44th-ranked Sooners suffered their first loss of the season in nine matches.

With the sun emerging after a rare rainy week in the desert, OU won the second and third doubles matches by an identical 8-6 score to earn one team point. The No. 1 match, which was equally close, was then halted.

UNLV stormed out to win the first set on five of six courts in singles play. However, the Sooners rallied to win three second sets to ensure an exciting finish.

The Lady Rebels tied things at 1-1 when Cindy Treber won her match at No. 5, 6-1, 6-4. Amy Hadziosmanovic then won on the sixth court for the hosts. At the top spot, 70th-ranked OU's Anda Perianu rallied to down Paulina Janus, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, to knot the match at two.

Lady Rebel Tracie Chong then won in three sets on No. 4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, and Agnieszka Abram clinched UNLV's win on Court Three, 6-1,1-6, 6-3. The match on No. 2, which saw Lady Rebel Gyorgyi Zsiros leading in the third set, was halted.

"It's nice to win our own tournament and I am proud of all of our players," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "We beat an outstanding Oklahoma team, which shows we are getting to where we want to be at this point in the season."

UNLV is now off until hosting Texas A&M on March 11.

In Sunday's third-place match, New Mexico defeated Cal State Northridge 5-2. In the consolation bracket Southwest Missouri State shut out Montana State 7-0 and Northern Arizona nipped Loyola Marymount 4-3.
