New Mexico Nipped

SAN DIEGO - UNLV's women's tennis team rallied after being swept in doubles play to get by New Mexico 4-3 in a neutral-site league battle at the SDSU Tennis Courts Friday.

The 33rd-ranked Lady Rebels improved to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain West Conference while the 52nd-ranked Lobos fell to 8-8 and 0-2.

UNM raced to a 1-0 lead by taking all three doubles matches. However, UNLV got wins from the top half of its singles lineup as well as from No. 6 to survive the upset bid. Tied at 3-3, Lady Rebel senior Paulina Janus rallied past Sandy Lukowski at the No. 1 spot, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 to earn her team the victory.

Also winning for UNLV was Gyorgyi Zsiros, who knocked off 108th-ranked Tjasa Suvak 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. Tracie Chong at No. 3 and Amy Hadziosmanovic on court six also won in straight sets. UNLV wraps up its road trip with a match vs. Air Force Saturday in San Diego.
