LAS VEGAS - Jackie Kerrigan threw a two-hit shutout and Shan McDonald won her 500th game as a head coach as the UNLV softball team defeated intrastate rival Nevada-Reno 2-0 at Eller Media Stadium on Friday.
McDonald, who is in her 17th year at the helm of the Rebel program, now carries a career record of 500-442. The Rebels are 10-12 on the season.
But it was Kerrigan who was the hero on the afternoon, giving up just two hits from the circle and driving in both runs at the plate.
The game's only runs came in the bottom of the second inning after Pauline Glenn drew a leadoff walk and Kacey Ellis singled to put two aboard. But the Pack (9-9) picked up two quick outs before Kerrigan stepped to the plate. She pulled a long double to left, over the head of UNR leftfielder Marcie Neff, allowing both runs to score.
Once the Rebels established the lead, Kerrigan went to work from the field, After a leadoff single in the fourth, she retired the last 12 hitters of the game to seal the win.
UNLV continues play in the weekend's tournament on Friday evening with a matchup against Utah State.
