SAN DIEGO - Playing in unseasonably cool temperatures, the 28th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team warmed up its league title defense by shutting out Wyoming 4-0 in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Championship at the SDSU Tennis Courts Thursday.
The top-seeded Lady Rebels improved to 16-4 overall and 7-1 vs. the MWC while the Cowgirls fell to 8-14 and 0-8.
UNLV began the morning by taking the first two doubles matches for one team point, both by the score of 8-1. The remaining match was then halted.
In singles play, no Lady Rebel lost a set but three matches were halted after the score reached 4-0 in less than two hours.
At the top spot, newly named All-MWC player Gyorgyi Zsiros breezed by Patricia Chien 6-1, 6-3. Fellow all-conference honoree Tracie Chong downed Jennifer Hancock at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0 to notch her 25th victory of the year against nine defeats. And at the bottom position, senior Amy Hadziosmanovic improved to 17-5 on the year by easing past Gwen Moser 6-0, 6-1.
UNLV, which is looking to win its third MWC tournament championship in four years, moves on to a rematch with BYU in one of Friday's semifinals. The Cougars knocked the Lady Rebels out of the top 25 with a 6-1 upset on April 5 in a match played indoors in Provo, Utah. BYU, seeded fourth, advanced with a 4-2 win over Colorado State in the first round.
