PROVO, Utah - Playing its ninth match in just over two weeks, the 22nd-ranked UNLV women's tennis team ran out of gas and closed the regular season with a 6-1 loss at No. 56 BYU at the Indoor Tennis Courts Saturday.
The Lady Rebels, who fell to 15-4 overall, had their 13-match winning streak vs. Mountain West Conference opponents snapped and allowed rival San Diego State to tie them for the regular-season league championship with a 6-1 mark, which still was the first time UNLV earned even a share of the regular-season crown.
With a lineup nursing various injuries and having to play a rare indoor match, UNLV was swept in doubles play to fall behind 1-0.
In singles, only Agnieszka Abram scored for the visitors with a 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 (10-4) win over Rebecca Pike at No. 4. At the second singles spot, top Lady Rebel player Paulina Janus, who skipped doubles because of an elbow injury, defaulted after playing just two games.
"We lost to a good team today but we were definitely a tired, banged up group," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "We are looking forward to some time to heal up and get ready to defend our tournament championship."
The MWC tournament is set for April 24-26 in San Diego.
