Volleyball Splits Final Day Of LMU Tournament

LOS ANGELES - The UNLV women's volleyball split a pair of matches on the final day of the Loyola Marymount University Fumara Hotel Invitational on Saturday. Sheila-Ocasio Clemente, who amassed 24 kills in three matches, earned a place on the all-tournament team.

The Rebels opened the day with a 3-0 (31-29, 30-21, 30-25) loss to Sacramento State. Junior Michelle Johnson led the team with 12 kills. She hit .321 (12-3-28) for the match and had one block.

Ocasio-Clemente tallied 10 kills in the match, while Michelle Banks put up seven kills and 10 digs. Nicki King finished the match with 41 assists, four digs and one kill.

The Rebels finished the tournament with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-25, 30-21) victory over West Virginia. With the win, UNLV opened the 2003 season with a 1-2 record.

Leiana Oswald led the team with 11 kills. She added six digs and one block assist in the winning effort. Banks and Ocasio-Clemente finished with eight kills each. Banks added six digs and one block, Ocasio-Clemente had four digs and three blocks.

Patricia Assuncao had her best game of the short season. She finished the match with seven kills, eight digs and a team-high five blocks.

UNLV returns home on Friday to host the UNLV Invitational with Cal State Fullerton, Lamar and Morgan State. Action begins at 5 p.m. on Friday in the Cox Pavilion.
