SPOKANE - The UNLV women's volleyball team picked up a 3-2 (30-19, 30-20, 22-30, 28-30, 15-11) victory over Gonzaga in the opening match of the Gonzaga Volleyball Classic.
The Rebels breezed to victory in games one and two by scores of 30-19 and 30-20 before Gonzaga stormed back to win games three and four 30-22, 30-28. UNLV would win the deciding game 15-11 after pulling away by as many as six points during the middle part of the final match. The win is the fifth straight for the Rebels and improves their record to 5-2 on the season. The Zags fall to 1-6.
Leiana Oswald and Tarin Keith tallied 20 kills each and finished the match with double-doubles. Oswald added 11 digs and three service aces, while Keith finished with 12 digs and five service aces.
Nicki King put up a season-high 60 assists and a career-high nine blocks, one solo and eight assisted. Patricia Assuncao finished with a career-high 20 digs to go along with nine kills, five blocks and three service aces. In all, the Rebels dropped 14 aces on the Zags.
Michelle Johnson added nine kills and five blocks, while Michelle Banks tallied seven kills and eight digs.
Abby Cullen led Gonzaga with 16 kills and six blocks.
UNLV wraps up play in the Gonzaga Volleyball Classic on Saturday with a pair of matches. The Rebels play Idaho State at 12:30 p.m. and follow with Boise State at 5 p.m. Idaho State defeated Boise State in the only other game on Friday.
