LAS VEGAS - Graduating UNLV defensive back Jamaal Brimmer continued to collect All-America honors Monday.
Just the fourth two-time All-American in school history and first since Randall Cunningham in 1984, Brimmer added to his previous Sporting News nod by being named to the Rivals.com All-America Second Team and the Associated Press Third Team.
Brimmer is just the second non-punter to earn AP All-America honors since UNLV moved to Division One in 1978, joining second team wide receiver Jim Sandusky in 1981. The last Rebel to be recognized by AP was punter Joe Kristosik, who was a first team choice in 1998.
The consensus Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2002 and 2003, Brimmer finished his senior campaign this fall by becoming the Rebels' second-ever three-time first team all-conference honoree. Despite missing significant playing time at the end of the season because of an injury, Brimmer ranked second on UNLV with 51 solo tackles and finished seventh in the MWC with 8.2 tackles per game. His two forced fumbles moved him into second all-time at UNLV and in MWC history with nine. His 280 career tackles put him fifth all-time at UNLV and he was named MWC Defensive Player of the Week for third time in his career after posting nine tackles, one forced fumble, one pass breakup and one interception that he returned for 24 yards to set up a score in a win at BYU.
Brimmer, a 6-1, 215-pound graduate of Durango High School, was a 2004 preseason first team selection by Athlon and for the second straight season was on the official watch lists for both the Jim Thorpe Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy.
