KU KO'd And Lady Rebels Advance

LAS VEGAS - The host Lady Rebels stayed perfect at home this season with a 6-1 victory over Kansas to close the first round of the third annual UNLV Women's Tennis Spring Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.

The Lady Rebels improved to 4-2, including 4-0 in Las Vegas, while the Jayhawks fell to 0-5 overall.

UNLV began by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point.

In singles play, Gyorgyi Zsiros breezed by Courtney Steinbock 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Also winning for UNLV was Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis at No. 3, Cindy Treber at No. 4, Claire Smith at No. 5 and Mery Constanti on Court Six.

"This was a good match to get through on a cool afternoon," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "Kansas has a lot of talent and our performance was a nice way to start this tournament."

The Lady Rebels advanced to Saturday's semifinals where they will meet No. 27 Tulane. The Green Wave downed Northern Arizona 6-1. The other semifinal match will see No. 14 Fresno State, which got by Boston College 4-3, take on 63rd-ranked Washington State, which upset No. 38 Oklahoma State 5-2 in a morning match.

Semifinals are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. PST, weather permitting. The tournament concludes Sunday.
