LAS VEGAS - Former UNLV place-kicker Dillon Pieffer signed a free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams and will join the NFL team for preseason camp beginning Tuesday in Macomb, Il.
The four-year starter for the Rebels left as the school's third-leading scorer with 231 points and booted more field goals in a career (40) than anyone in Mountain West Conference history.
Pieffer, a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., also kicked off for UNLV the past two seasons. The three-time academic All-MWC honoree, who graduated with a degree in hotel administration, was one of 20 semifinalists for the Lou Groza Place-Kicker Award as a senior.
After hitting 20-25 field-goal attempts in 2003, Pieffer was named second team all-conference. His average of 7.2 points per game ranked 47th nationally for all players and he left as his school's career point-after-touchdown leader, hitting 111 of 117 career attempts.
Pieffer earned MWC Special Teams Player of the Week three times in his career, including last fall after hitting four field goals and scoring a school-record-tying 15 points in a victory over Hawaii. He also booted a career-long 50-yarder in a victory at New Mexico.
