LAS VEGAS - San Jose State's Ismael Ibarra scored twice in the last six minutes of the game, the second being a golden goal 1:39 into overtime, to rally the Spartans past UNLV in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action on Friday night. The loss was the eighth straight for the Rebels, sending them to 2-10 overall, 0-3 in league play, while SJSU improved to 6-3-2, 2-0 in the MPSF.
After scoring just one goal in its last five games, UNLV looked ready to break out of its losing streak with two goals in the first 14 minutes of the game, both from senior forward Rod Dyachenko. The first score came in the eighth minute, when a ball in the box bounced off several SJSU defenders before Dyachenko collected the ball and sent a shot to the left post for a 1-0 lead. Dyachenko's second goal came in the 14th minute, when Deshawn Woolery drove down the left baseline and crossed the ball over to Dyachenko, who scored easily from eight yards out for a 2-0 Rebel edge.
That was the last goal for the next 60 minutes, as UNLV held the Spartans to just one shot in the first half. SJSU came out determined in the second half however, taking advantage of several breakaways to take shots at the Rebel goal. UNLV goalkeeper Peter Clitheroe managed to make several point blank saves to keep the Spartans scoreless, while Ben Pisch also came up with a big team save on the goalline, heading out a shot when Clitheroe was caught out of the net.
The Spartans broke through in the 75th minute, as Nelson Diaz scored from five yards out for to cut the lead to 2-1. Johnny Gonzalez and Ismael Ibarra assisted on the score. With the clock winding down, the Spartans would tie the game in the 86th minute, after a Rebel foul just past midfield. Gavin Wenyon sent a long free kick into the box that was headed in by Ibarra into the left corner to make the score 2-2. Ibarra and Wenyon hooked up again in overtime, as Wenyon's corner kick was headed in again by Ibarra for the game-winner.
After taking just one shot in the first half, SJSU outshot the Rebels 13-4 in the second half, and 1-0 in overtime for a 15-10 edge. The Rebels were called for 22 fouls, to 11 for the Spartans. Clitheroe finished with two saves and three goals allowed for UNLV, while SJSU goalkeeper Richard Mann posted two saves and two goals allowed.
UNLV will next host Sacramento State on Sunday at Noon at Peter Johann Field.
