Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - UNLV turned in a gritty performance after having to play the final 50 minutes of the game down two players due to red cards, but Sacramento State's Oscar Sandoval scored with just 1:46 left in the game to give the Hornets a 2-1 victory in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. The loss was the ninth straight for the Rebels, giving them a 2-11 overall record, 0-4 in league play, while Sac State won its first MPSF game of the year to improve to 6-4-1, 1-2 in the conference.
The Rebels were limited to 10 players in the 16th minute after Deshawn Woolery received a red card. Despite being shorthanded, that did not stop Rebel senior midfielder Rod Dyachenko from scoring his third goal of the weekend, as he streaked down the right side after collecting a pass from Chris Wessel, and slotted a shot to the left post for a 1-0 UNLV edge in the 24th minute.
Sac State would tie the game at 1-1 in the 35th minute, on a score by Ricky Rodriguez. Ryan Rhoads sent a cross into the box that Rodriguez blasted into the left corner for the Hornets' first goal of the game. Just five minutes later, UNLV's Forrest Smith received a red card and was ejected, giving the Hornets a two-man advantage for the rest of the contest.
They would not take advantage of that however until late in the game. The Rebels played one of their best defensive games of the season, limiting the Hornets to mostly outside shots that were either off the mark or stopped by Rebel goalkeeper Peter Clitheroe, who finished with a season-high nine saves. The winning score came in the 89th minute, as Josh Zimbrich sent a cross into the right side of the box that was headed in by Sandoval for the game-winner. UNLV almost tied the game in the 90th minute when Ben Haugland found himself free inside the box and blasted a shot at the goal, but Matt McDougall made the saves for the Hornets.
UNLV was outshot 18-5 for the game, 14-2 in the second half, both teams had five corner kicks. McDougall finished with three saves in goal for Sac State.
The Rebels return to action on Saturday, as they take on second-ranked New Mexico in Albuquerque at 6 pm (PST).
