SAN DIEGO - UNLV sophomore Elena Gantcheva and senior Cindy Treber both advanced to the third round of the 2005 Wilson/ITA Women's Tennis West Regional Championships Thursday at the Barnes Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State.
Gantcheva, seeded second and ranked 24th nationally, enjoyed a first-round bye before dispatching Ali Borowicz of UC Irvine 6-1, 6-2 to advance. Treber downed Tina Razloznik of Arizona and then got by Eva Dickes of Pepperdine 6-1, 6-4 in the second round.
The other four Lady Rebel entries all lost in the first round and will begin play in the consolation bracket on Friday.
UNLV split its two doubles matches as Treber and Mery Constanti won 8-3 over Emmanuelle Tabatruong and Krystina Katayama of Long Beach State while Claire Smith and Linda Tempelfelde were doubled up 8-4. UNLV's top duo of Gantcheva and Sharon Marin earned a bye to the second round.
No less than 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 3-6 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
