UNLV To Host Aztecs in Lone Match Of The Week
After having at least two matches a week, UNLV will only play two in the next two weeks. Following a sweep of this past weekend's matches on the road, the Rebels will host the upstart Aztecs of San Diego State on Friday, Oct. 7, at 7 pm in the Cox Pavilion. Currently, UNLV is riding a two-match winning streak and have won four of its last five and boasts this week's Mountain West Conference's Player of the Week, Lauren Miramontes.
Last Week In Review
The Rebels had one of their best weekend's of the season with their first MWC road trip of the year. For the fourth time in seven seasons, UNLV has swept the New Mexico-Air Force trip. Previously, the Rebels had won the set in 2000, 2001 and 2004. The Rebels extended their dominance over the two squads as they have a three-match winning streak over New Mexico and have won the past 12 against Air Force
Facing a rejuvenated New Mexico Lobo team that had already won as many games (nine) as it had in all of 2004, UNLV flew away from Albuquerque with a 3-2 (30-19, 27-30, 30-23, 28-30, 15-8) victory. The Rebels out hit the Lobos 76-to-60 and .299-to-.217. UNLV did not have a single-game where it hit below .244 (game four), but had three above the .308 mark (game one the team hit .406).
The Rebels were led by the seventh double-double of the season by Brittani Lumsden (21 kills, 13 digs). Maria Aladjova (19), Lauren Miramontes (15) and Mariana Pencheva (11) closed out the players that racked up double-digits in kills. Melody Nua assisted on 60 kills, while Jada Walker (19) and Michelle Banks (11) dug out 30 of the Lobo attacks.
At the Air Force Academy, UNLV jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but had a letdown in game three en route to a 3-1 (30-16, 30-25, 28-30, 30-19) win. Miramontes tied Lumsden's weekend-high of 21 kills. She hit for a .432 average (21-5-37). Lumsden and Banks both tallied 10 kills apiece, while Banks added a game-high 18 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Melody Nua registered 53 assists and 10 digs for her third double-double.
MWC Player Of The Week
For only the fourth time in Mountain West Conference history, a UNLV Rebel has been named the league's player of the week. On Monday, Oct. 3, Lauren Miramontes was awarded the honor for her play in the weekend sweep of New Mexico and Air Force.
Miramontes had 36 kills on the weekend for a 4.00 kills per game average. She hit for a .438 mark (36-8-64). She led the team with four service aces and collected five digs. At the net, she blocked seven attacks (one solo, six assisted) for a 0.78 blocks per game average.
The three previous MWC Player of the Week selections from UNLV were: Angie Sylvas (Nov. 23, 1999); Blair Wilkes (Dec. 2, 2002) and Nicki King (Oct. 25, 2004)
