SAN JOSE, Calif. - UNLV scored twice in the last 11 minutes of the second half to force overtime, and were able to force a double-overtime 2-2 tie at San Jose State in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. The tie broke a school-record 12-game losing streak for the Rebels, and was also their second straight overtime contest after falling 2-1 at Sacramento State on Friday night.
San Jose State (10-5-3, 6-2-1) looked to have the game in hand from the beginning, as Johnny Gonzalez scored two goals in the first 20 minutes. He scored the first in the 11th minute off assists from Nelson Diaz and Daniel Perez, and added a second tally in the 20th minute, this time with Marvin Sorto assisting on the play.
UNLV (2-14-1, 0-7-1) was able to get off its shots during the game, taking nine in both the first and second halfs, but could not find the back of the net until the 80th minute. Mason Trafford sent a through ball to senior forward Rod Dyachenko, who slotted a shot into the goal at 79:30. It was Dyachenko's eighth goal of the season, bringing UNLV within one goal at 2-1. The Rebels then took advantage of a free kick in the final minutes of the second half, as Nicholas Paterson's kick was headed into the goal by Martin Kenny at 88:27 for the tying score. The game would go into overtime, and though SJSU held an 11-4 edge over the two extra periods, the game would end in a draw.
Rebel goalie Peter Clitheroe finished with 10 saves and two goals allowed in the game, while Richard Mann posted four saves for the Spartans. SJSU held a 36-22 edge on shots, and 7-2 edge on corner kicks.
The Rebels will finish out their season this weekend, as they take on Air Force on Friday at 7 pm, followed by a Sunday Noon contest against Denver. Both games will be played at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
