LAS VEGAS - Sheena Moore's 17 points led four Lady Rebels in double figures and UNLV shot 60 percent in the second half to post a 69-51 win over Troy in women's collegiate basketball action on Thursday afternoon on Tarkanian Court at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Lady Rebels improved to 7-3 with the victory, while Troy dropped to 5-5.
Moore, who scored UNLV's first seven points of the game, was joined in double figures by Kisha Lee (15), Sherry McCracklin (12), and Sequoia Holmes (11). McCracklin, who just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, reached the 1,000 career point mark on a layup with 7:38 to play in the game, becoming the 16th Lady Rebel to score 1,000 points at UNLV. She also added a season-high four blocks and two steals. The Lady Rebels were also helped by their shooting in the second half, as they made 15-of-25 for 60 percent, and finished the game hitting a season-high 50 percent.
Troy led just once, on a three-pointer from Amy Lewis for the first points of the game 1:27 into the first half. Moore countered with a jumper and a trey to swing the lead back to the home team, and connected on another jumper to make the score 7-3 in favor of UNLV. The Lady Rebels would extend the lead to seven several times during the opening half, but UNLV turnovers (11) and long-range shooting (4-of-7) by the Trojans kept Troy in the game. Following an Audrey Muse jumper that brought Troy within two, 23-21, UNLV ran off an 8-2 run to end the half, sparked by five straight points from Faye Muller, and took a 31-23 advantage going into the break.
UNLV opened the second half scoring six of the first eight points for a 37-25 edge. Trailing 44-33, the Trojans put together their last run, scoring six unanswered to close within five, 44-39 with 11:37 to play. A three-point play from Lee began an 11-0 run for the Lady Rebels, and the lead grew to as large as 22, 69-47.
The Lady Rebels finished 26-of-52 from the floor for 50%, and hit 15-of-19 at the line for 78.9%. UNLV held a 38-25 edge on the boards, and also posted 11 steals and five blocks, and cut their turnovers down to just five in the second half.
Troy was paced by Laura Lee Holman with 18 points, while Amy Lewis chipped in 10. The Trojans were held to 39.3% from the floor, and turned the ball over 18 times.
UNLV plays in its second straight doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, taking on Lamar at 3:30 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center, following the Runnin' Rebels' game against Southern Utah at 1 pm.
