LAS VEGAS - The 15th-ranked UNLV men's golf team shot a 6-over-par 294 on Friday during the first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship at Southern Highlands Golf Club (par 72, 7,510 yards) and is in sixth place, six shots behind team leader Arizona State, which shot an even-par 288 to lead the field.
South Carolina and UCLA are tied for second at 2-over 290, while Oklahoma State is fourth at 4-over 292 and Washington rounds out the top five at 5-over 293.
Individually, South Carolina's Mark Anderson and UCLA's Daniel Im lead the field after the first round as they each shot 6-under 66 on Friday. The pair lead the tournament by three shots over Texas' Matthew Rosenfeld, who is 3-under.
Andres Gonzales, who is competing as an individual, turned in the best score for UNLV at 2-under 70 and sits in a fourth-place tie with Georgia Tech's Michael Barbosa. C.J. Gatto, who is also playing as an individual for UNLV, is tied for 10th with eight other golfers at even-par 72 including fellow Rebel Sam Hunt, who's score is counting toward the team total.
Other Rebel scores during Friday's first round of play are: Ryan Moore (73, +1; T19th), Matt Kinsinger (74, +2; T31st), Jarred Texter (75, +3; T40th), who is competing as an individual, Travis Whisman (75, +3; T40th), Casey Fowles (76, +4; T48th), who is competing as an individual, Ryan Keeney (78, +6; T61st), Troy Denton (84, +12; 80th), who is competing as an individual and J.C. Deacon (85, +13; 81st), who is competing as an individual.
Play continues with 18 holes on Saturday and concludes with 18 holes on Sunday.
