April 1, 2005

LAS VEGAS - The 40th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team won the doubles point but could not close out No. 58 BYU as the Rebels were upset 4-3 in their Mountain West Conference opener Friday on the campus of San Diego State.

UNLV fell to 12-5 overall while the Cougars improved to 13-4 and 1-0.

The Rebels began the day by taking two of three doubles matches for one team point. Winning for UNLV were Joel Kielbowicz and David Campbell at the top spot and Henner Nehles and Aviram Salomon, who improved to 11-0 this year with a victory on court two.

In singles play, BYU proved too strong at the bottom of the lineup as the Cougars scored at Nos. 4-6 along with the clincher at the second spot.

Rebel senior Nehles won at the top position in a super-tiebreaker, 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-3) over Nima Roshan to improve to 21-8 overall. UNLV's other point came on court three where junior Joel Kielbowicz breezed by Shane LaPorte 6-4, 6-2.

The Rebels, who are playing four matches away from home in as many days, will look to bounce back vs. No. 57 Utah on Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
