FRESNO, Calif. - UNLV women's track and field finished in a second-place tie as a team and won seven events Saturday at the final day of the Cal-Nevada Championships at Warmerdam Field on the campus of Fresno State.
The Rebels rang up 123 points to tie with Cal State Northridge and UNLV was just three points shy of overtaking host Fresno State, which won the women's title with 125.5 points.
Rebel senior Christine Spence had a strong day on the track, winning the 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles while also running legs on the 400 and 1600 meter relay teams that both took first. In the 100 meter hurdles Spence clocked a 13.68 and added a time of 57.68 in the 400 meter hurdles. Spence beat teammate Miesha McClendon in the 100 meter hurdles as she finished second with a time of 13.84.
Halima Decree also took home two first place awards, winning both the 100 and 200 meters Saturday. The senior sprinter recorded a time of 11.75 to win the 100 and added a time of 23.93 in the 200 to win that event. Brittney Bullocks added a fourth-place finish in the 200 for the Rebels with a time of 24.53.
Deanna Appuglise added a victory in the 400 meter for the Rebel effort Saturday, winning with a time of 55.41. Bullocks also scored points for UNLV in that event, coming in third with a time of 55.62.
Michele Suszek added a second-place finish in the steeplechase with a time of 11:02.26 and the senior distance runner finished fifth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:40.56. In the 400 relay UNLV's squad won the race by running a regional qualifying time of 45.68. UNLV also won the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:43.66.
After the meet was completed two Rebels won awards given out by the Cal-Nevada Track and Field Association. Spence earned the Outstanding Track Performer for women for her two hurdle wins and head coach Barbara Ferrell-Edmonson was named the Coach of the Year for women.
