LAS VEGAS - UNLV's freshman midfielder Lamar Neagle scored the golden goal just after the start of the second overtime to give the Rebels a hard-fought 2-1 upset victory over Northwestern on the second day of the UNLV adidas Classic on Sunday afternoon from Peter Johann Memorial Field. With the win, the Rebels evened their record at 2-2, and finished play in their home tournament with a 2-0 record for the first time in four years. Northwestern, ranked 15th by Soccer America, dropped to 2-2 with the loss. In the day's other contest, UC Santa Barbara (2-1-1) scored late in the second half to earn a 1-0 win over No. 23 Portland (1-2-1), which also gave the Gauchos a 2-0 record for the tournament.
Northwestern took advantage of a misplay by UNLV goalkeeper Peter Clitheroe to score the first goal of the game. A long shot was sent from midfield on a free kick that Clitheroe misjudged, and as he moved backwards to grab the ball out of the air, he stumbled while grabbing the ball and dropped it. NU's Jaro Pylypczak was in perfect position to take advantage, and knocked in a shot from seven yards out into the empty net for the score in the eighth minute.
The Rebels tied the game in the 37th minute, as Nicholas Paterson's corner kick into the box was deflected by a Wildcat defender right to Deshawn Woolery. The senior midfielder quickly settled the ball and blasted a shot to the top right corner for the tying score.
Neither team scored in the second half, though the Wildcats had several good chances, outshooting the Rebels 9-2 over the period, and the Rebels were forced to make a team save on the goalline to stop a NU goal. After a quiet first overtime period, in which UNLV took the only two shots, Neagle came up with the first game-winner of his career in the 102nd minute. With the play down on the Wildcats side of the field, Woolery tracked down a loose ball in the middle of the box, and passed off to an unmarked Neagle on the left side. Neagle then took a hard low shot that was hit hard enough to just get through Wildcat goalie Misha Rosenthal and into the back of the net for the golden goal.
UNLV finished with a 16-12 edge on shots, and were also called for 17 fouls to 13 for Northwestern. Clitheroe posted five saves in goal, while Rosenthal finished with three.
In the second game, Chris Pontius took a pass from Andy Iro and slotted a shot to the right corner for a UCSB goal in the 73rd minute for the 1-0 win. The Gauchos finished with a 15-6 edge on shots.
