LAS VEGAS - UNLV midfielder Lamar Neagle picked up his second weekly honor on Wednesday, as he was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for Sept. 5-11, it was announced on Wednesday. Neagle was also named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week on Monday. This marks just the third time a UNLV player has been named to Soccer America's Team of the Week, as former standout Alex Hernandez received the honor twice, once in 2001 and once in 2003.
The Rebel freshman came up huge in UNLV's two upset wins over the weekend, helping them to a 2-0 record in the UNLV adidas Classic. In the Rebels' 2-1 win on Friday over No. 23 (NSCAA) Portland, Neagle scored the first goal of the game as he collected a pass from Chris Wessel while keeping his stride, dribbled through three defenders and hit a shot to the right post in the 23rd minute. It was his first career goal, and the Rebel's first win over a ranked opponent in three years.
Neagle came up even bigger in UNLV's next game on Sunday against Northwestern, ranked 15th by Soccer America. Just after the start of the second overtime, he took a pass from Deshawn Woolery on the left side, and from 10 yards out blasted a shot through the Wildcat goalie and into the net for the golden goal in the 102nd minute and a 2-1 Rebel victory. The two goals on the weekend ties him for first on the team and second in the MPSF.
UNLV, 2-2 overall, goes back on the road this weekend to play in the Oregon State Diadora Classic. The Rebels will meet Oregon State on Friday at 3 pm, followed by a 1 pm match against No. 25 Cal State Northridge on Saturday.
