Mike Sanford Quotes From His Media Luncheon

Sept. 19, 2005

On what his coaching staff is doing following the loss to Nevada, Reno:
"What we are doing is basically going through the ways that we broke down, analyzing what those were and what we need to do to correct it."

On the team's passing struggles against UNR:
"I think on the surface is that with our passing, a lot of people look at the quarterback and look at the statistics from a quarterback's stand point but it is a team game. We didn't protect in the passing game like we should have, we didn't run routes in the passing game like we should have and even if it is one guy, that one guy is huge in the play."

On the changes in the depth chart:
"We are going to play the best guys. Nobody is safe. You've got to compete and come out every day and do your job and there are some guys who need a little wake up call."

"JaJa Riley has played his heart out and has played really hard. He is a senior and he deserves to play. We will play both those guys (Erick Jackson and JaJa Riley) at tailback. It is not that we are penalizing E.J., I see it as we are moving up and creating competition and more opportunity for JaJa."

On getting ready to play this week:
"There is a horrible feeling we all have in our stomachs right now after Saturday night. We have to get that feeling out of our system. I think our defense played really hard and kept us in the game but as an offense, to score 7 points in 58 minutes is ridiculous. That is unacceptable."

"I think there will be some revenge probably from the returning players, but the big thing we got to do, I believe, is identify the things that went wrong, correct them and put our players in a position to be successful."

On preparing for a team that has only played one game:
"It is a little bit weird in that we have played three games and they have played one. I think the one thing we've got to realize and I will make sure our players understand this, is that you have to look at the improvement of the team up North from game one to game two. There is going to be a similar thing happening with Utah State."
