LAS VEGAS - Five of the eight seeded singles players were upset during the first day of action at the Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships, which kicked off at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV Friday.
UNLV super sophomore Elena Gantcheva, ranked eighth in the nation and seeded fourth in this tournament, managed to avoid the upset bug and won twice to advance. After a first-round bye, Gantcheva got by unranked Elizabeth Lumpkin of UCLA 6-3, 7-6 in the afternoon to improve to 16-4 on the season. She will face Stanford's 69th-ranked Celia Durkin in the first of two scheduled singles rounds on Saturday.
The other two seeded players still alive are Stanford teammates: third-seeded and fourth-ranked Alice Barnes and fifth-seeded and 10th-ranked Theresa Logar.
In Flight Two, another Lady Rebel advanced with two wins. Linda Tempelfelde survived Justine Walsh of South Carolina 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in the first round and then surprised Judy Devera of fifth-ranked Southern California 6-3, 6-3 in the nightcap.
In doubles action, UNLV's lone entry of Cindy Treber and Mery Constanti, earned a bye in Flight Two.
"We got off to a great start this weekend," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "Whenever you are competing against some of the top teams in the country, it's nice to come out with some wins. I was impressed with both Elena winning in straight sets and Linda beating two quality opponents to stay alive. They both will have a challenging Saturday."
The tournament, which is free and open to the public, will hold its singles quarterfinals and semifinals Saturday after the doubles quarterfinals open the day at 10 a.m. PST.
