UNLV vs. New MexicoPostgame Quotes
UNLV head coach Mike Sanford
On the turnovers:
One of the things that we ended up doing in this game was turning the ball over to much. We turned the ball over too much. That is the bottom line. One of the things we said going into this game was that we were going to have to win the turnover battle.
Overall on the game:
I don't know what to say. I thought we were going to win. I expected us to win. I thought we came back and I just believed we were going to win.
I thought our guys played hard, with character and with heart. That doesn't take away the fact that we didn't win the game. We have got to find a way to win those games and we will.
On QB Shane Steichen:
I think he played pretty darn well at times. But he had the same amount of turnovers as touchdowns.
On the starting QB next week:
I don't really want to make that judgment right now. I want to watch the plays and take a look at it and see what happened. At times we did really good things tonight and at times the offense did some good things and the defense did some good things. But obviously there were too many mistakes, negative plays and turnovers to win the game.
We are going to evaluate it, look at it, grade them and then see where we are at from here.
On carrying good things over through the rest of the season: I think we improved a lot tonight. We fought and played with heart and I want to carry that over to the rest of the season.
On not being able to put New Mexico away:
I don't think you can look at this and say that one phase of the game is to blame. We can't let them back in the game. We had them down 28-14 at the half and we couldn't put them away in that situation.
It is not a one-side of the ball loss. It is a team loss.
