UNLV vs. New Mexico Game NotesOct. 14, 2006
UNLV fell to 1-7 all-time in overtime games with the 39-36 defeat, including 1-5 at home.
UNLV QB Shane Steichen, who came in on the team's third offensive series, tied a school record by throwing five touchdowns (all in regulation). It was the third time in school history a Rebel had accomplished the feat (Jon Denton vs. San Jose State in 1997 and Larry Gentry vs. UTEP in 1980).
A UNLV QB had not thrown for more than one touchdown pass in a game since Jarrod Jackson tossed three against Utah on Oct. 22, 2005 - a span of nine games.
UNLV LB Beau Bell finished with a game-high and season-high 16 total tackles (eight solo) and 3 TFL. It was the fifth time in six games this season the junior hit double-figures in tackles.
Rebel RB Ronnie Smith's 30-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter was his first career touchdown, rushing or receiving. It was also the longest catch of his career.
Freshman defensive back Daryl Forte recorded his first career interception in a Rebel uniform, picking off a pass in the second quarter. It was the fifth interception this season, all by different UNLV players.
The five UNLV interceptions in 2006 have come in just five games, equaling the total from last year's team that had five picks in 11 games in 2005.
Freshman linebacker George Vea blocked a punt in the second quarter, the second blocked punt of the year for the Rebels and first since their opening game at home against Idaho State.
Junior-college transfer wide receiver Aaron Straiten caught his first career touchdown pass at UNLV, a 14-yard pass from senior quarterback Shane Steichen in the second quarter.
WR Ryan Wolfe caught a 75-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter that was the longest catch of his career and it was also the second 70-yard-plus touchdown reception this year for Wolfe. He caught a 71-yard score in the Rebels' opener against Idaho State.
Wolfe finished the game with 176 receiving yards, which broke his own UNLV freshman single-game record, which he set with 160 yards and a touchdown on six receptions against Idaho State in the season opener. The 176 yards marked the 14th-most in school history.
The 75-yard touchdown pass was the longest of Steichen's career and it was the longest touchdown pass by a UNLV quarterback Kevin Crook hit Len Ware for a 77-yard TD pass on Sept. 5, 1998 at Northwestern.
Steichen had 188 yards and four touchdown passes in the second quarter alone, marking the first time UNLV had thrown for four or more touchdowns in a game since Steichen tossed four during a three-overtime game vs. Wyoming on Nov. 6, 2004. The four TDs in the second quarter were one more than UNLV had passed for in the previous five games combined.
The 28 points in the second quarter were the most scored by UNLV since the Rebels got 28 in the fourth quarter in a win over UNR on Oct. 2, 2004.
UNLV tight end Chris Butler caught his first touchdown, a four-yard reception from Steichen in the second quarter.
New Mexico linebacker Cody Kase returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. It was the third time in the past four games that a Rebel interception was returned for a score.
