UNLV at Rams & Falcons Revisited: Colorado State - The UNLV volleyball team was swept by the Colorado State Rams in three games last Friday evening in Fort Collins, Colo. The loss snapped the Rebels' four-match winning streak with three of those wins coming against conference foes. UNLV dropped the match with scores of 27-30, 29-31, 22-30.
CSU out hit UNLV .163 to .013 and racked up eight more kills (47-to-39) in the match. Maria Aladjova was the lone Rebel to rack up double-digits in kills with a match-high 14. Kristin Koochi and Melody Nua split setting duties, as they each assisted on 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Jada Walker dug out 16 Ram attacks, while Camille Cunningham stopped 12. At the net, Samantha Noland was active with one solo block and assisting on six others.
Air Force - The UNLV volleyball team picked up its ninth sweep of the season with its 3-0 win on the road at Air Force last Saturday night. The Rebels won by scores of 30-24, 30-21, 30-23.
The Rebels out hit the Falcons .302 to .052 and hit 48 kills to AF's 33. Lauren Miramontes led the Rebels with a team-high 10 kills and chipped in four blocks (one solo), as well. Erin Greenwood hit a team-best .467 with eight kills. Michelle Banks threw down six kills, while hitting at a .429 clip. Brittani Lumsden (.375) and Jessica Walters (.294) rounded out those with high numbers. Melody Nua dished out 22 assists to lead the squad, while Kristin Koochi had 16. Camille Cunningham tallied double-digits in digs with 10.
Great Eight: After 20 matches of play, UNLV sits at 14-6 in 2006. The Rebels hold a winning percentage of 70% and are eight-matches over .500. The last time in program history that a team was over .500 by eight or more matches came in 1998.
The 1998 squad began the year 6-3 prior to rattling off a program-best 10 match winning streak to go 13-matches above .500. They pushed the mark to +16 prior to a loss in the final match of the season to conclude the year at 23-8 (+15).
Three Games and Out: Since the volleyball program was brought back in 1996, the program's longest streak of consecutive 3-0 wins was three, which was achieved in 1997, 1999 (twice) and 2004. The 2006 Rebels eclipsed the three-match 3-0 mark and created a new one to beat at four straight. On Sept. 2, in Pullman, Wash., at the Baden Cougar Challenge, UNLV blanked UC Davis and Boise State. On Sept. 8-9, at the UNLV Invitational, the Rebels skunked UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge. The Rebels nearly made it a five-match streak until Xavier took game three after trailing UNLV 0-2.
On the year, the team has won nine of its 14 matches in 3-0 fashion. The most 3-0 sweeps in any give season came in 1998 when the squad won 12.
What Comes After Four: Through the first four matches of 2006, the Rebels were 2-2. Since the loss to Washington State on Sept. 1, to even the record at 2-2 the team has won 12 of its 16 matches. In the 14-match stretch there are winning streaks of six (the third longest in program history) and four matches.
Saturday is Quite Alright: Saturdays have been good to the Rebels this season as the squad sits 10-1 on the day this season. The Rebels were 7-0 prior to its lone Saturday loss to then-#16 BYU, but got back on track with three wins on consecutive Saturdays since. UNLV sits 4-5 for the rest of the week.
