LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's swimming and diving team won nine of 16 events and Devin Phillips came up with a crucial swim to help the Rebels top 24th-ranked and preseason conference favorite BYU on Saturday afternoon in a Mountain West Conference dual meet from Buchanan Natatorium, while the Rebel women dropped a 195-105 decision to the Cougars.

In a meeting between the top two programs in the conference on the men's side, BYU held the lead after the first two events, but a first-place swim by Richard Hortness in the 200 free (1:40.31) helped UNLV (2-1, 2-0 MWC) take a 28-27 edge, and a 1-2 finish in the 100 back by Devin Phillips (50.75) and Tiger Christian (51.42) pushed the lead to eight points. BYU kept close the entire meet however, and would tie the score at 75 following the eighth event of the afternoon, taking first and second on the 1-meter diving. Brandon Nelms won the next event, the 100 free in a time of 45.02 for UNLV to take back the lead, and Phillips and Christian repeated their 1-2 performance, this time in the 200 back in times of 1:50.29 and 1:51.78, respectively, to push UNLV up 101-87.

The meet was sealed for the Rebels in the second-to-last event. Holding a 12-point edge, Tamas Bosnyak won the 200 IM in 1:52.77, and Phillips took second to give UNLV 13 points in the event and an 19-point edge, before the Cougars just touched out the Rebels' 400 free relay in the last event to make the final score 155-145.

Also winning events on the afternoon for UNLV was Johan Claar in the 500 (4:31.56) and 1000 free (9:24.83), and Jonas Andersson in both the 100 (57.65) and 200 (2:05.99) breast.

On the women's side, UNLV (0-3, 0-2 MWC) was paced by Bailey Kuestermeyer, who won the 200 breast in 2:18.80, and also took second in the 200 fly (2:09.01). Also winning an event on the afternoon was Marina Sandback in the 50 free (23.88), while she also placed second in the 100 fly (56.96). Lani Seaman was second in the 500 (5:03.92) and 1000 free (10:12.66), Marva Harpak swam 1:53.04 to take second in the 200 free, Kim Bonney was second in the 100 breast (1:05.21), and Amanda Weinbrecht was second in the 200 back (2:07.63).

Saturday's action was the final dual meet for UNLV in 2006. Next up is the University of Texas Invitational, held on Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Austin, Texas.
