SAN DIEGO - The Rebel volleyball team (19-9 overall, 10-6 Mountain West Conference) made quick work of San Diego State (11-17, 5-11) Friday night, as UNLV took the Mountain West Conference (MWC) season finale for both teams in three games 30-24, 30-23, and 30-24. With the sweep, the Rebels tied their season record for three-game wins with 12, tying the mark from 1998.
UNLV struggled on the offensive side of the net, connecting for just a .172 hitting percentage, slightly below its season average of .200. The Rebels made up for it defensively, totaling 22 blocks while holding San Diego State to a .116 hitting mark.
Leading the way for the Rebels was Lauren Miramontes, who finished with match-highs of 18 kills and six blocks, while hitting .516 from the field. Michelle Banks also played well on the attacking side, hitting at a .414 clip for the Rebels, ending up with 15 kills.
Kristin Koochi posted a double-double for UNLV, notching 20 assists to go with 10 digs. Melody Nua also dished out 20 helpers, while senior Jada Walker dug out 20 attempted Aztec attacks.
The Aztecs were paced offensively by Melanie Greene's nine kills. Leah Lathrop had a match-high 24 assists, with Aime Cordeiro leading SDSU with 17 digs.
The Rebels finish the regular season fourth in the standings, and will enter Wednesday's MWC Tournament as the No. 4 seed. UNLV will have to wait until after Saturday night's action to see who it will face. New Mexico and Wyoming will battle tomorrow night to see who will earn the No. 5 seed and take on the Rebels in Wednesday's first round.
