Rebels Ready For MWC Tournament

First Serve: UNLV (19-9 overall, 10-6 Mountain West Conference) heads into the MWC Tournament, Nov. 23-25, in Las Vegas as the #4-seed and will play the fifth-seeded Wyoming Cowgirls on Thursday, Nov. 23 at 4:00 pm. UNLV rides a three-match winning streak into the tournament following its 3-0 sweep in the regular season finale at San Diego State this past Friday, Nov. 17.

Let The New Season Begin: The Rebels closed out the 2006 regular season on Friday, Nov. 17 with a 3-0 win over the San Diego State Aztecs. With the conclusion of the regular season, UNLV moves into a "new" season of sorts with the Mountain West Conference Tournament quaterfinals on Thursday, Nov. 23. The Rebels are paired up with Wyoming in the round of eight and will play the 4:00 pm match on Thursday. If UNLV gets past the Cowgirls it will play the winner of the top-seeded Utah vs. the victor of #8-New Mexico / #9 -Air Force "Play-In" match in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 24 at 4:00 pm. The other half of the bracket is composed of the No. 2-seeded BYU Cougars, the No. 3-seeded Colorado State Rams, the No. 6-seeded TCU Horned Frogs and the No. 7-seeded San Diego State Aztecs.

The champion of the tournament gains an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament are scheduled to take place between Nov. 30 and Dec. 3.

UNLV vs. San Diego State - Revisited: SDSU - The UNLV Rebels extended its winning streak over San Diego State to seven matches with its 3-0 sweep (30-24, 30-23, 30-24) of the Aztecs this past Friday, Nov. 17. With the victory, the Rebels extended its winning streak to three matches. By defeating SDSU in sweeping fashion, it gave the Rebels 12 such wins by 3-0 margins. The 12 sweeps tie the program record of 12 set by the 1998 squad.

UNLV was led by offensive outputs from Lauren Miramontes and Michelle Banks. Miramontes hit for a match-high 18 kills, while she racked up a .516 hitting percentage. Banks nearly equaled her teammate's performance with 15 kills and a .414 efficiency of her own. Defensively, each collected six assisted blocks apiece, while Banks threw in seven digs.

Kristin Koochi tallied the lone double-double of the match by combining 20 assists with 10 digs. Melody Nua tied Koochi in assists with 20, while Jada Walker led all defenders with 20 digs.
