Rebels' Rally Falls Short

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (3-1) suffered their first defeat of the season in a 5-3 loss to the No. 12/13 ranked Oklahoma Sooners (2-1) Saturday evening at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels were down 5-1 going into their final two at-bats, but managed to score two in the sixth and put two on in the seventh, but a bang-bang play ended the rally.

The Rebels jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly by Maggie Livreri. Marissa Nichols came around to score after she opened up the offensive series with a single. Nichols stole second and took third on a throwing error by the catcher.

Oklahoma answered with two runs in the third on three hits. A double by Traci Dickenson and a single by Norelle Dickson got things going for OU. After Dickenson scored on the single, Kristen Vesely plated Dickson on a triple. Christie Robinson relieved Kelly Griego (0-1) in the circle and ended OU's scoring opportunities by recording the third out with the bases loaded.

The Sooners pushed their lead to 5-1 with three runs in the sixth off of three hits and a critical Rebel error.

UNLV got within two runs of OU's lead with a two-run home run off the bat of Rosa Ordaz. The homer was the second in as many nights, as she hit a grand slam in last night's win over Illinois-Chicago.

In the seventh, Kendall Fearn reached on an error by the Sooners' shortstop. With Britney Hillyer pinch running for Fearn, Brittany Freight singled to left field. A passed ball thrown to Sandy Nakamura moved Hillyer to third. Following a strike out by Nakamura, Nichols hit a slow grounder up the middle which Savannah Long smothered and dove to touch second base to force Freight out on the play.

UNLV returns to Eller Media Stadium on Sunday morning for a doubleheader with a 9am tilt versus Kentucky and a 1pm affair versus #14 Washington.
