TUCSON, Ariz. - UNLV freshman Da Sol Chung finished tied for third and broke the scoring record for a 54-hole tournament in leading the Rebel women's golf team to a sixth-place finish Tuesday at the Wildcat Invitational to open the spring season with a solid start.
Chung carded back-to-back scores of 69 in the final two rounds of the tournament to finish with a three-round total of four-under 209 (71-69-69) for her highest placing in her short Rebel career. Chung's 209 was the lowest 54-hole score in Rebel history, breaking the record of 211, which was set three times, most recently by Elena Kurokawa in the Spartan Invitational last spring.
The Rebels shot a team total of 865 (+13) at the 54-hole tournament played on the par-71, 6,166-yard Arizona National Golf Course which had a field of 11 of the top 15 teams in the country according to Golfweek. No. 9 Arizona State won the team titled with a 12-under 840, as the Sun Devils finished six strokes ahead of No. 1 Duke, which shot a six-under 846. Those two teams were the only squads under par and they were followed by Cal and No. 2 UCLA who tied for third at 859 (+7) and No. 6 Auburn came in fifth (864, +12) and then the Rebels. Jacqui Concolino of Vanderbilt won medalist honors with three-round nine-under 204 while Sophia Sheridan of Cal took second with an eight-under 205. Chung was part of a group of four who tied for third with a four-under total of 209.
Fellow freshman Grace Woo cracked the top 20 for the Rebels, coming in tied for 17th after shooting a one-over 214 (69-71-74). Woo was two-under and tied for fifth entering the final round but closed with a three-over 74.
Kurokawa finished tied for 25th (217, +4), Seema Sadekar tied for 52nd (225, +12) and Kasi Lee finished 92nd (249, +36) to round out the Rebel scorecard. Lee was playing in her first tournament for the Rebels after she transferred to UNLV from Tulane this winter. UNLV sophomore Allison Chell also competed in the tournament, but as an individual and she finished tied for 82nd with a three-round total of 242 (+29).
UNLV is off for three weeks and then will host the UNLV Spring Invitational, a three-round tournament on March 13-15 at Black Mountain Golf Course and that will feature a field of 18 teams.
