LAS VEGAS - The 37th-ranked UNLV women's tennis moved into the championship match of its own spring tournament for the fourth time in the event's five-year history after defeating Boise State 7-0 Saturday during the second day of the Lady Rebel Classic at a sun-splashed Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The hosts did not lose a set en route to improving their record to 6-2 overall, including 6-0 at home this season, while the 73rd-ranked Broncos fell to 7-2.
UNLV will face No. 47 Fresno State in Sunday's final, which begins at noon. The Bulldogs got by Oklahoma State 5-2 to advance. While reaching the final for the fourth time, the Lady Rebels have only won the team title just once (2003). In last year's championship, 15th-ranked Tulane downed UNLV 4-0.
Also beginning at noon, Boise State and OSU will compete for third place. Those matches will be preceded by Loyola Marymount taking on UC Santa Barbara for fifth place and Northern Arizona playing Montana for seventh. For time considerations on travel day, all Sunday matches will end when one team reaches four points.
Against BSU, the Lady Rebels began the morning by sweeping three highly competitive doubles matches to hand the Broncos their first doubles of the season and take a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, 18th-ranked Elena Gantcheva improved to 22-7 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Megan Bjorkman at the top spot. Nikol Dimitrova won her match on court two, Sharon Marin at number three, Cindy Treber improved to a team-leading 7-1 in duals with a win on court four, Claire Smith was victorious at number five as was Linda Tempelfelde at the sixth position.
"Today was really a solid performance by our program," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "Boise State has a quality lineup so to win across the board was meaningful for us. Now we have a big test tomorrow against Fresno State."
