Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - UNLV women's track and field had 12 top-10 finishes and a record-breaking performance on a blustery Saturday afternoon as the Rebels hosted the UNLV Invitational at Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr-Smith Field.
Sophomore thrower Monique Humphries broke the school record in the hammer throw, tossing it 159'-6.00", breaking the school record of 151'-0.00" previously held by Angela Turner. Humphries finished eighth in the hammer on Saturday and this is the second school record that Humphries has set, as she also holds the indoor weight throw mark, which she set last year.
Despite a blustery day that saw winds continually blow, several UNLV athletes set personal or season best times.
Lekeisha Lawson finished second in the 100 meters, clocking a time of 11.79, the fastest time this year for the freshman sprinter from Victorville, Calif. She also added an eighth-place finish in the 200 with a time of 24.64, which was also a season best. Lauren Johnson also ran two season-bests on Saturday, finishing third in the 100 with a time of 11.84 and fourth in the 200 with a 24.04.
Tanesha Carr finished tied for 10th in the 100 meters with a time of 12.29, which was a personal best time for the sophomore from Aurora, Colo. Brittney Bullocks also cracked the top 10, finishing fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 56.76.
Jennifer Shearer led the Rebel distance runners, coming in fourth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:03.94. Senior distance runner Katie Hughes added a 20:07.63 in the 5,000 meters, which was a grueling race considering how hard the win was blowing.
In the 400 meter hurdles junior Ashley Patin finished four with a time of 1:04.95, rounding out the top-10 finishers for the Rebels on the track.
Away from the track, two other Rebel athletes joined Humphries in the top 10, as Ernestine Johnson finished ninth in the long jump (17'-1 3/4") and Olivia Raya finished ninth in the shot put (38'-1.00").
Other highlights on the day included UNLV alum and four-time All-American Christine Spence clearing 6'-2.00" to win the high jump.
The Rebels were joined in the field by Cal State Dominguez Hills, Dayton, Long Island, Manhattan, Nevada-Reno, Northern Arizona, San Diego Mesa, Southern Illinois, St. John's, Texas Tech and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
This was the third consecutive weekend that the Rebels have been in competition, as UNLV opened its outdoor season with the Aztec Classic on March 18 and the ASU Invite on March 25. UNLV will now take next weekend off before continuing their season at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 14-16.
