Rebels Run Over Beavers In Win

The UNLV Rebels (2-1) defeated the Oregon State Beavers (1-2) 3-1 on Saturday night in the UNLV Classic to claim second-place in its own tournament. The Rebels fell behind after dropping game one, but rebounded to knot the score at 1-1 after two and ran away with games three and four for the win. UNLV won the match with scores of 30-32, 30-28, 30-18, 30-28.

UNLV had three players register double-doubles with Lauren Miramontes leading the charge with 25 kills and 10 digs. Michelle Banks dropped in 14 kills and 13 digs, while Maria Aladjova had 12 and 19, respectively. Jennifer Johnson was second on the squad with 19 kills.

Miramontes hit a staggering .408 in the match with her 25 kills and five errors in 49 attempts.

Melody Nua assisted on 65 Rebel kills, while Jada Walker pitched in with 23 and Camille Cunningham had 12.

OSU had three players (Ashley Evans, Kristin Murray and Brittany Cahoon) amass double-doubles. Evans assisted on 28 kills and dug out 18 Rebel attacks. Murray threw down 13 kills and had 17 digs, while Cahoon had 10 kills and 13 digs.

The Beavers' Rachel Rourke had a match-high 26 kills in the loss, as she hit .354.

For the match, UNLV hit at a .290 clip. The Rebels hit no worse than .227, with game three's .395 as their best output. The Beavers hit .224 overall and only hit above .228 once with that being in their game-one win (.413).

Up next for UNLV is the Baden Cougar Challenge in Pullman, Wash., hosted by Washington State. The Rebels will play the WSU Cougars at 7 pm, next Friday (Sept. 1). UNLV will take on UC Davis at 10 am on Saturday with a match later that day against Boise State at 5 pm.
