Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - The UNLV volleyball team (8-2, 1-0 Mountain West) fought off a pesky San Diego State squad (4-6, 0-1 MWC) Wednesday night in the Cox Pavilion for a 3-2 win. After falling behind 1-0, the Rebels reeled off two straight wins for a 2-1 advantage. The Aztecs evened the score at 2-2 with a game four win, but dropped the decisive fifth frame and the match to the Rebels. UNLV won the match with scores of 25-30, 30-21, 30-22, 28-30, 15-10.
The win pushes UNLV's winning streak to six matches, the longest since a seven-match streak in 1999. This current streak ranks as the third longest.
The Rebels out hit the Aztecs .205 to .144 and held a 13-kill edge at 77-to-64. UNLV began the first game by out hitting SDSU .256 to .225, but the Aztecs managed to take the game. From game two on the team with the highest hitting percentage in each frame went on to win that individual game. UNLV's best came out in the fifth game when the team hit .412 with seven kills and no errors in 17 attempts.
Maria Aladjova and Jessica Walters led the Rebels with double-doubles. Aladjova threw down 16 kills and notched 15 digs to Walters' 12 kills and 11 digs. The Rebels had three others hit for double-digits in the kill department with Lauren Miramontes (13), Jennifer Johnson (13) and Erin Greenwood (11) rounding out the five. Of all attackers with 10 or more kills Greenwood led the way with a .292 hitting percentage and a team-high five total blocks.
Melody Nua fell two digs shy of picking up a double-double with eight digs and 60 assists. Jada Walker stopped 31 Aztec attacks to lead the all players in the digs for the match.
SDSU had three players tally double-doubles with Stephanie Darnall's 19 kills and 20 digs, Melanie Greene's 15 kills and 17 digs and Leah Lathrop's 28 assists and 13 digs. Darnall led all attackers in the match with her 19 kills. Audra Dent nailed 16 kills, as well. Kristen Castillo picked up one more assist than Lathrop for the team-high with 29. Aime Cordeiro had a team-high 30 digs.
Up next for UNLV are weekend matches in California against Long Beach State and UC Riverside. The Rebels play LBSU on Friday evening, Sept. 15 at 7:00 p.m. and follow that up with a Saturday matinee with UCR at 5:00 p.m.
